Oratorio coming to Toronto

Journey To Jerusalem, the Jewish People’s Oratorio, will mark its 10th anniversary with its Toronto premiere on April 3 at Beth Tikvah Synagogue.

“I’ve made so many significant changes to the oratorio that the Toronto production is really a world premiere of the new Journey To Jerusalem,” says composer and librettist Eyal Bitton.

Composed for Jerusalem’s 3000th anniversary, it premiered in 1996 as an official Jerusalem 3000 event under the auspices of Israeli Consul General Daniel Gal in Montreal.

Called the “musical event of the year” in reviews, it was performed by a 25-piece orchestra and a 175-person choir for an audience of 1,000 at Montreal’s Salle Claude-Champagne. It recounts 5000 years of Jewish history in two hours of original music, text, and narration.

The oratorio is a major work by a Canadian composer and librettist who seeks to reach out to a contemporary North American audience.

“This is a modern oratorio with the bulk of the text in English; its musical style is a mix of classical, Sephardi/Andalusian, klezmer and musical theatre,” explains Bitton.

Journey to Jerusalem features Cantor Tibor Kovari, Michèle Tredger, Jason Allen, Yehezkel Lipinsky, the Beth Tikvah Choral Society, the 25-piece Beth Tikvah Gala Orchestra, and narrator Marsha Lederman (the voice of CBC’s Radio News and The Arts Report). It will be conducted by Bitton.

Tickets are $50 for patrons, $30 for seniors, $35 for general admission and $20 for students.
