Performance marks Yiddish writer’s 90th anniversary

The timeless world created by the great Yiddish writer, Sholom Aleichem – the man who gave us such memorable characters as Tevye the Dairyman and inspired the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof – will be brought to life on April 2 in a unique tribute marking the 90th anniversary of his death.

Hello, Sholom Aleichem!, as this Yiddish/English production is called, features a dramatization of excerpts from Sholom Aleichem by the internationally acclaimed actor, mime and theatre scholar Rafael Goldwaser of Strasbourg, France. Joining him are several of Toronto’s leading Jewish artists, including actor Harvey Atkin; singer-actress Theresa Tova; guitarist and pianist Brian Katz; singer-actor Mitch Smolkin, and the choir of Bialik Hebrew Day School under the direction of Nella Koren.

An exhibit in the Beth Tzedec Congregation’s Reuben and Helen Dennis Museum will complement the show.

Hello, Sholom Aleichem! will take place on Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at Beth Tzedec Congregation, 1700 Bathurst St. Admission is free, but a voluntary contribution of $5 will be gratefully accepted at the door.
