Re: Equal school funding (Jewish Tribune, March 23)
Conservative Opposition Leader John Tory is in favour of solving the obvious discrimination in this issue. The premier says the current denominational school funding exclusion is unjust.
The minister of education says we have no plans to solve the problem because it’s a hurdle. He reviews several other insubstantial smoke and mirror red herring excuses like the issue of “standards” and concludes the issue is “not a priority.”
This scenario reminds me of the Biblical story of Esther, which we celebrated recently in the Purim festival.
Education Minister Gerard Kennedy does as he personally pleases to hurt the religious communities, just as Haman, the evil advisor, did. Our premier fails to exercise intelligent authority like the foolish king did. The wise sage Mordecai who comes to our rescue is played by Mr. Tory. It’s all there. There’s no need to stretch this historical analogy.
So what’s the Bible teaching us? Aside from wearing sack clothes and ashes, engaging in fasting, prayer and repentance the Jews in this story went to war and won.
Today, the oppressed citizens of the governments “evil decree” should go to war by embarrassing the government through civil protest at every opportunity. As I said above: It’s all there. There’s no need to stretch this historical analogy. Just do it.
