Sharansky got it wrong, reader says

Natan Sharansky succinctly described how Israel and the western democracies subsidized and appeased the corrupt and murderous Palestinian Authority headed by Arafat and then Abbas (Jewish Tribune, March 16). A more vocal and murderous threat to the Jews of Israel comes from the newly elected Hamas.

While understanding the folly of appeasing the various Palestinian political factions since 1993, Sharansky commits a serious error when he asserts that Israel must “seek ways to support any Palestinian individuals and organizations” that want democracy and reform. He claims there are “countless Palestinian who want a better future” including living in peace with Israel.

Where is there evidence of the multitude of Palestinians who want to prosper and live in peace with the Jewish state? Polling data from Israeli and Arab sources reveal that Palestinians do not accept the Zionist state and strongly support their (suicide) fighters taking innocent Jewish lives.

There are no Palestinian publications or leaders who advocate peaceful co-existence with Israel. Indeed, the harsh reality is that even though the Zionists of the pre-Israel state tried to make life attractive for the Arabs, the Jews had to face the likes of The Grand Mufti Haj Amin Husseini (an admirer of Hitler and Himmler) who not only rejected any accommodation with the Jews, he galvanized the Palestinian Arabs to murder Jews in the 1920s and 1930s. Some legacy.

What can Israel do? Israel can grant the Palestinians the right to self-rule including their own flag and passports. But it is incumbent on Israel to make it a first priority that the security and well being of Jews not be threatened. Israel must no longer adhere to the 1993 government premise that murdered Jews died for peace. No Jewish life is expendable, nor any Jewish home dispensable. This means the Arabs must be disarmed and accept subordination of their foreign, economic and educational policies.

If any Arabs refuse to live in peace with Israel they have the option to leave. The Jewish state comprises some 10,000 square miles in the Arab Middle East of more than 5 million square miles. That small piece of land must be preserved and defended for the Jewish people. Unfortunately the Jewish leadership in Israel and abroad still travels on the road map leading to a sovereign Arab state carved out of Israel. It will take great Jewish courage and strong faith to withstand the pressures to carve up the Jewish state.
