Two major meetings of interest to the Jewish community took place last week, the Jewish Tribune has learned.
Alan Baker, Israel ambassador to Canada, met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in what was termed a supportive meeting.
Baker said, “The Prime Minister of Canada and I had a supportive, warm meeting, recently, during which we discussed a series of subjects including Hamas, Iran, Hezbollah, and bilateral trade. Stephen Harper was invited to visit Israel. While he is interested in coming, being the head of a minority government, he cannot make any definite plans as of now.”
Commenting on the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office said, “The prime minister of Canada and the Israel Ambassador to Canada had a private meeting on March 20,” but would not elaborate.
In another meeting, Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe met with a delegation of Jewish leaders, led by Gerry Weinstein, president of B’nai Brith Canada to discuss issues of domestic and foreign affairs.
According to Weinstein, one topic of particular interest to the Jewish delegation was the Bloc’s position on the terrorist group Hamas, which won a majority of seats in the Jan. 25 Palestinian Authority election.
Weinstein was pleased that Duceppe has taken a strong and principled stand on the whole Hamas question.
“Duceppe said Hamas must be compelled to recognize the state of Israel and renounce violence against Israel and the Jewish people before they (Hamas) can be recognized as a legitimate entity.”
