Most archaeological excavations in Israel encourage volunteers. Field conditions are less than luxurious. Digging with a trowel and brush is hard work in the hot sun, and involves schlepping baskets of earth to the dump. But the experience coupled with trips to other archaeological landmarks, as well as holy places, can be tremendously enriching. Volunteers pay for their own room and board, which vary from air-conditioned hotels to student dorms to tents.
The dig at Sepphoris is ongoing this summer, as are excavations at another 20 sites.
