Community flocks to Shomrai Shabbos dinner

More than 700 guests attended a dinner held by Shomrai Shabbos in the banquet hall of Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto Nov. 20.

“This Evening of Honour pays homage and tribute to some of our distinguished members as exemplary role models in our Shul and community,” said Rabbi Yacov Felder, spiritual leader of Shomrai Shabbos in his journal remarks. “Their devotion to serve the tzibur in a variety of capacities in Torah and Chessed is a crowning glory to our shul.”

Honourees included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Marder, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Weinbaum, Rabbi David Aronson, Dr. Colin Geft, R’Chanani Kleinman, Rabbi Moshe Teichner, Rabbi Asher Bornstein, Rabbi Yossi Weitman, Rabbi Yoseph Simon, Dr. Eli Bienenstock, R’ Yaakov Gottlieb, Dr. Yechiel Kurtz, Yaakov Schnoll, Abe Gottesman, Dov Gottleib, Amichai Harari, Moshe Kesten, Josh Plonka, Jay Spitzer, and Dr. Leiby Weiss, representing the teachers, lay leaders, long-time members and pillars of Shomrai Shabbos.

Rabbis, administrators and representatives from Orthodox Jewish Institutions city-wide. Noted orator Dayan Ehrentrau, head of the Beit Din of London and the Commonwealth and a close friend of the Felder family, flew in especially to attend this dinner and to address the audience.

Due to its popularity, the synagogue is physically outgrowing its current facility. “Shomrai Shabbos is unique in that it is the shul at which many young couples begin their married lives, and start their young families. Some move out of the area but take with them the wonderful experiences they shared with Rav Felder and the shul,” said Eddie Philips, dinner chairman.

The Shul plans to expand its current facility and include a second Bais HaMedrash, a Mikveh to service the the neighbourhood, an enlarged social hall, expanded kitchen, an elevator for the disabled and elderly, plus additional rooms for classes.

Hundreds of individuals are taking part in the writing of a Sefer Torah, which will be dedicated in memory of Rav Gedalia Felder zt”l, who’s impact on the shul and entire community continues to be felt long after his passing. There are still opportunities to purchase a letter, word, pasuk, aliya or parsha in this Sefer Torah and by so doing, join in what has truly become a community effort.
