Concordia President Frederick Lowy, in an op ed in Mondays Toronto Star, cites the universitys inability to enforce security as the reason for the cancellation of the planned campus venue for former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
Two years ago an alarm bell was triggered when rioters forced the University to cancel a speech by Benjamin Netanyahu on the grounds of security concerns, said Frank Dimant, Bnai Brith Canadas executive vice-president. Surely, the university has had ample time to address these concerns and take appropriate measures to restore safety on campus.
The only way that the university can restore its credibility is by reissuing an invitation to Benjamin Netanyahu to address students in the original 2002 venue. This holds true for Ehud Barak as well, who must be extended an invitation to address an audience right on Concordias campus. Anything less would be considered a victory by militant groups who clearly continue to set the campus agenda.
Its time that Canadians said no to intimidation and no to compromise.
