Bronfman takes the Giving Pledge

SEATTLE - Charles R. Bronfman has joined 91 other billionaires and their families who have taken the Giving Pledge and committed to donating half their wealth to philanthropy.

“Philanthropy is in the DNA of my family,” Bronfman wrote in his pledge letter. “My parents were both active participants in Jewish, local Montreal and Canadian charities. The dining table conversation was a place for discussing what was important to them in that world.... It is no surprise, then, that each of us has contributed to society.”

Bronfman is chairman of The Andrea & Charles Bronfman Philanthropies Inc., a family of charitable foundations operating in Israel, the United States and Canada. He is a former chairman of Seagram’s and Koor Industries Ltd. and founding owner of the Montreal Expos.

The Giving Pledge was initiated in 2010 by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates as a way to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit half their wealth to philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice.
