Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, 96, died Saturday
TORONTO, 1 July 2012 - B'nai Brith Canada has joined in the worldwide mourning over the passing of Yitzhak Shamir, former prime minister of the Jewish state. The organization has stated it will remember the Israeli leader for his dedicated leadership and willingness to listen to, and act on, the concerns of the global Jewish community.
Frank Dimant, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada, issued the following statement:
"Former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir has passed after a distinguished and dedicated career building and defending the state of Israel. Born in Poland as Yitzhak Jaziernicki, he longed for a day when the Jewish people would live free of persecution in their homeland, and played an active role in realizing this very dream. He was respected for the strong and principled leadership he provided and for his devotion to the Jewish state and its protection. His committed leadership will be missed at the very time that it will be needed most. We will remember him as a good friend of B'nai Brith, always eager to hear the concerns of the grassroots Jewish community in Canada and around the world."
