JERUSALEM – Yad Vashem and the Council of Europe (COE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance Holocaust education in the council’s 47 member countries.

The agreement was signed at Yad Vashem by Thorbjorn Jagland, the secretary-general of the COE, and Avner Shalev, chair of Yad Vashem.

“This agreement denotes willingness to deepen and enhance Holocaust education in Europe and to encourage teacher training and to reconstitute historical awareness,” Shalev said.

The memorandum is expected to create and strengthen ties between the member states and Yad Vashem.

Teachers from abroad will be invited to speak at Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies.

At the moment, the International School is involved with 30 of the 47 COE member states.
