Light up your life

Fitting your interiors is an exhausting job but when it all comes together it’s magic.
Every aspect is as important as the next – especially lighting. Not only in form but in function.
The perfect light fixture is the jewellery that finishes off the outfit. Its array of light, depending on its function, needs to also be at the forefront of your decision. Each space in your home needs to be addressed differently, with different layers of lighting to address atmosphere, general task and ambiance.
Kitchen
One of the most important rooms to have an abundance of light is the kitchen. The detail work done and the different times of day that the space is used greatly dictates the proper lighting. I always recommend pot lighting throughout for general task lighting, hanging fixtures over the island to add ambiance and LED under cabinet for atmosphere. A fun accent for ambiance is LED lighting below the base cabinets (near the floor)…. for late night snackery.
Bathroom
The space should encourage a refreshed feeling during the day, and relaxation at night. I encourage clients to add pot lighting throughout as well as wall sconces on the vanity wall with a dimmer for ambiance. Light placement is also crucial to the design. Make sure the pot lights are set back from the vanity so no shadows are cast on your face.
Dining Room
The jewelled centrepiece. At one time the sole source of ambiance is now the accent to proper lighting effects. Pot lighting on dimmers is now grouped with the chandelier.
Bedroom
Pot lights or a single ceiling fixture, depending on the room size, is sufficient for the bedroom. I love to use wall sconces or hanging fixtures on either side of the bed to free up the side tables and add a tailored atmosphere.
Whatever the space, always consider how it is being used and by whom.
