TORONTO – Being a religious minority looking for a person to marry within that minority is for most a tough prospect. Even tougher is trying to find that special someone within a small minority within that minority, in this case Orthodox Jews looking for Orthodox Jews. Sometimes shul events aren’t enough to meet people.
So one group is taking the search a step past the shidduch – those traditional third-party setups. Instead, there’s a modern twist for this generation of observant Jews.
A group that calls itself Jewish Observant Singles is throwing a hip singles-and-mingle party at a Toronto kosher restaurant, replete with games, food and fun. They’re calling the event “Jew Meet Jew.”
For those so inclined, experienced matchmakers will be on-site to help facilitate a meet-up and arrange a date. A professional facilitator will run ice-breakers and games to ensure that everyone gets involved and meets the maximum number of people.
The only stipulations to attending are that you are kosher and observe Shabbat (and, of course, are single).
It all happens on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 398 WEST restaurant at 398 Eglinton Ave. W., at Avenue Road, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Covert is $18.
