VAUGHAN – The Canadian premiere of Was It a Dream by Edna Mazya, one of Israel’s leading playwrights, will be performed by Toronto’s only Hebrew-language theatre company, Mifgash Theatre, on Sunday, Feb. 7. Two performances – 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. – will be given at the City Playhouse, 1000 New Westminister Dr., There will be English subtitles.
The critically acclaimed play follows the tempestuous love between actress Hannah Rovina and poet Alexander Penn in the young and vibrant Tel Aviv of the 1930s. In the background, a literary war rages between national poet Hayim Nahman Bialik and the ‘pretender to the throne’ Avraham Shlonsky, and a no-less-turbulent political struggle between the leader of the Labour Movement and the Revisionists.
Mifgash Theatre, a community theatre company initiated by UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and the Schwartz/Reisman Centre, performed its first production last year to a soldout audience. The company is part of the Hamifgash program, directed by Galya Sarner, which is designed to share Hebrew-language and Israeli culture with Toronto’s diverse community.
Tickets are on sale for $25. Call (416) 635-2883 ext. 5280 or email Sarit Shor at
