TORONTO – The popular Kiva’s Bagel Bakery and Restaurant, which opened its doors in the heart of the Jewish community in 1979, bakes a million bagels a year.

On Monday the establishment marked its 30-year anniversary by awarding Harold Tonken, purchaser of Kiva’s 30-millionth bagel, with a trophy and a cheque for $360.

Despite the advent of technology, Kiva’s homemade bagels and twisters are still individually hand rolled and kettle boiled. Kiva’s had announced that between 9 and 10 a,m. on Monday, someone would be purchasing that special, 30-millionth bagel. It was an exciting moment at the landmark eatery when Tonken was named the winner. His family was with him and along with the trophy and cheque, he was given a bagel wreath to wear around his neck.
