Toronto – Recently released exit survey statistics indicate that the number of Canadian visitors to Israel is on the road to recovery. Israel welcomed a record number of Canadian visitors, with upwards of 11,938 arrivals in July and August.

In the first six months of 2009, Israel’s tourism industry experienced the global effect of the current economic recession with a decline of 15 per cent in tourist numbers from Canada.

The Israel Government Tourist Office-Canada (IGTO) continues to work proactively to stimulate consumer, travel trade and airline interest in Israel. For the second half of 2009, Israel is witnessing a return to more encouraging visitor numbers, with numbers rising to match or surpass visitor numbers from the previous record year of 2008.

“It is very encouraging for us to see the growth in traffic from Canada to Israel,” said Oded Grofman, consul for tourism and director for Canada – Israel Government Tourist Office. “Canadians of all nationalities and religions are choosing Israel. We are confident that we will reach our predicted goal of 100,000 Canadian visitors to Israel by 2012.”
