TORONTO – Pianist Anton Kuerti, artistic director of the Fine Arts Quartet, one of the most distinguished ensembles in chamber music history, will join the group at its Mooredale Concerts debut for Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major.

The program features the quartet in B flat major, Op.76, No.4 (“Sunrise”) by Haydn; Quartet No.7, Op.108 (1960) by Shostakovich, and a virtually unknown quartet by Bruckner – the Quartet in C Minor (1862).

Founded in Chicago in 1946 and based at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1963, the quartet is one of the elite few to have recorded and toured internationally for more than half a century. Three of its current artists – violinists Ralph Evans and Efim Boico and cellist Wolfgang Laufer – have been performing together for more than 25 years. Violist Nicolò Eugelmi joined the quartet in 2009.

Each season, the quartet, which has recorded more than 65 works since 1985, tours worldwide, with concerts in major musical centres, including New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Mexico City and Toronto. A number of its most recent concerts have been named ‘Recording of the Year’ by Musicweb International. Some have earned high praise from American Record Guide and were selected for the Grammy Awards Entry list as Best Classical Album.

Special recognition was given for the quartet's commitment to contemporary music with a 2003-2004 national CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, given jointly by Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

The concert takes place on Sunday, Nov. 22, 3:15 p.m., in the MacMillan Theatre, Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queen’s Park Cres. Tickets ($35; $30 for seniors and students) can be purchased by visiting www.mooredaleconcerts.com or by calling (416) 922-3714.

The Fine Arts Quartet and Kuerti will also perform a 60-minute interactive concert for children 5-15 at Music & Truffles – same day and place – at 1:15 p.m. For tickets ($10), go to fineartsquartet.org.
