CALGARY – Earlier this year at one of their regular nostalgic meetings, the Calgary Winnipeg Club decided to hold a charity golf tournament. And though it was a beautiful day of golf at the inaugural Charity Golf Tournament at the Redwood Meadows Golf & Country Club in Calgary on June 25, it was also a bright day for B’nai Brith Canada, the recipient of a generous $2,000 donation as one of the selected charities.
“We are hoping to create a golf event that becomes legendary with a focus on making a better life for all, just as our families in Winnipeg had done before us,” said club President Don Jakul, who presented an oversized cheque to BBC Executive Board Chair Earl Barish at the tournament.
Comprising 32 former Winnipeggers, the group was created initially to reminisce about their formative years growing up in Winnipeg’s North End. Jakul describes the group as being made up of like-minded, hard-working and dedicated individuals who grew up during a very special time. Many members are now outstanding business leaders and professionals in Calgary, 20 per cent of whom are Jewish.
“This was my icing on the cake and the beginning of a new long-term relationship,” said Barish of the donation. “Don and his committee set out to provide the legendary experience and to raise funds to give back to their communities in order to provide a better life for all.”
The tournament helped raise a total of $20,000, which was split evenly between Calgary and Winnipeg charities. |
