CAMBRIDGE, ON – Thirteen scholars from the CUPE local at McMaster University braved the rain to demand the resignation of Gary Goodyear, minister of state (science and technology). Their van arrived at his constituency office in Cambridge from Hamilton where they flooded onto the parking lot, posters and CUPE flag in hand.
Led by a spokesperson who claimed to be Jewish, they attempted to hand out leaflets to drivers speeding by.
The spokesperson, who did not give his name after finding out he was being interviewed by the Jewish Tribune, came out of the rain long enough to enter Goodyear’s office to present the receptionist with a copy of their news release.
“We’re protesting Israel’s occupation of the West Bank,” he told the Jewish Tribune and then admitted that Judea and Samaria (pejoratively known as the West Bank) had been occupied from 1948 to 1967 by Jordan.
CUPE wants Goodyear to resign for suggesting that funding for a conference at York University entitled “Israel/Palestine: Mapping models of statehood and paths to peace” be re-examined.
Goodyear told the Jewish Tribune he is acting on calls to his office and information he had received that the conference was expected to be skewed against the Jewish state. “I brought this information to the immediate attention of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council so that they could have an opportunity to give them full consideration.” Contrary to CUPE charges, he did not advocate cancelling the funding of the allegedly pro-Palestinian conference scheduled for June 22 to 24 at York University. |
