TORONTO – The Holocaust Centre of Toronto will be renamed the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre following a $10 million gift from survivor Michael (Chaim) Neuberger to rebuild it.

Neuberger, 78, who lost his parents, four brothers and a sister in the Holocaust, was honoured on Monday at a groundbreaking ceremony at the Lipa Green building on Bathurst Street, north of Sheppard, where infrastructure construction on the new Sherman campus began several months ago and is slated for completion in November 2011.

“Educating people of all faiths about the Holocaust is so important to me,” Neuberger said. “We want to build this centre so that all people, of all ages and all nationalities, will learn the truth and learn from the lessons of the past.”

Currently, approximately 60,000 people, including many students, visit the Holocaust centre annually. The Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre will accommodate thousands more. In addition to expanding its current programs to include interactive, high-tech exhibits and a multi-media learning centre, the centre will provide outreach and anti-racism training programs for community organizations and redevelop its museum.

The Sherman campus will include a refurbished Lipa Green building, the Prosserman JCC, a rebuilt Leah Posluns Theatre and Koffler Centre for the Arts, and the National Centre for Jewish Heritage, which will include the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre.
