JERUSALEM – As the Kassam rockets fall on Sderot, Jewish families there are saying one thing loud and clear, “Other Jews in Israel and abroad don’t care about us.”
Connections Israel, a non-profit organization that for 10 years has been dedicated to connecting students and communities in the diaspora with IDF soldiers, is looking to rectify the Sderot situation.
Its new campaign is set to mark Rosh Hashanah by sending gift baskets and letters to each of the 10,000 families in Sderot. Connections Israel has already begun contacting Jewish organizations around the world for donations, but they estimate they need between 7,000 and 8,000 more gift baskets to reach their goal.
It’s a little slow so far, we’ve gotten individual donations, but if organizations want to donate they have to call all of their members so it takes a little more time. We still have time and once more communities get involved we should be okay,” says Managing Director Adi Friedman.
“A gift basket is not a lot of money, maybe $36, and in the local campaign in Israel we will buy them from Sderot business owners so they will get a double benefit,” Friedman continues.
Following the campaign, Connections Israel is also planning a touring art and photography exhibition around Sukkot that will feature the donated letters written to the Sderot families by Jews abroad and photographs of Sderot children with other kids from around the world. All of it designed around creating exposure to the terrible situation in the city and a lasting connection between Jews around the world.
“I want these people to feel like they’re not alone, like there are people around the world who care about them. Hopefully we won’t have to do this again and the violence will stop,” says Friedman.
